Trump and all the news that’s fit to tweet: part 2

Yesterday’s post — part 1 — looked at President Trump’s ramping up his daily tweets.

Part 2 covers the last five days of all the news that’s fit to tweet.

Spygate

As mentioned yesterday, Trump coined the term Spygate on May 23. A short while before, he tweeted:

Look how things have turned around on the Criminal Deep State. They go after Phony Collusion with Russia, a made up Scam, and end up getting caught in a major SPY scandal the likes of which this country may never have seen before! What goes around, comes around!

He also cited a popular Fox News commentator:

“It’s clear that they had eyes and ears all over the Trump Campaign” Judge Andrew Napolitano

Then:

SPYGATE could be one of the biggest political scandals in history!

He went on to take issue with former DNI James Clapper, who has been going on news and talk shows to say that the Deep State was trying to protect Trump during the campaign:

“Trump should be happy that the FBI was SPYING on his campaign” No, James Clapper, I am not happy. Spying on a campaign would be illegal, and a scandal to boot!

He ended with:

WITCH HUNT!

On May 24, he had more to say about Clapper and the spy, about whom there aren’t enough facts yet:

Clapper has now admitted that there was Spying in my campaign. Large dollars were paid to the Spy, far beyond normal. Starting to look like one of the biggest political scandals in U.S. history. SPYGATE – a terrible thing!

News stories began circulating about good agents in the FBI who want to come forward and talk. The hashtag is active:

Not surprisingly, the GREAT Men & Women of the FBI are starting to speak out against Comey, McCabe and all of the political corruption and poor leadership found within the top ranks of the FBI. Comey was a terrible and corrupt leader who inflicted great pain on the FBI!

On May 25, Trump continued:

Can anyone even imagine having Spies placed in a competing campaign, by the people and party in absolute power, for the sole purpose of political advantage and gain? And to think that the party in question, even with the expenditure of far more money, LOST!

Too right!

He cited The Federalist’s Mollie Hemingway, a fine investigative journalist:

“Everyone knows there was a Spy, and in fact the people who were involved in the Spying are admitting that there was a Spy…Widespread Spying involving multiple people.” Mollie Hemingway, The Federalist Senior Editor But the corrupt Mainstream Media hates this monster story!

It is true. The media and Democrats denied there was a spy and said the person was an ‘informant’:

The Democrats are now alluding to the the concept that having an Informant placed in an opposing party’s campaign is different than having a Spy, as illegal as that may be. But what about an “Informant” who is paid a fortune and who “sets up” way earlier than the Russian Hoax?

On May 26, he had more to say about the use of the word ‘informant’:

With Spies, or “Informants” as the Democrats like to call them because it sounds less sinister (but it’s not), all over my campaign, even from a very early date, why didn’t the crooked highest levels of the FBI or “Justice” contact me to tell me of the phony Russia problem?

In another tweet that day, he talked about the lawyers — ’13 Angry Democrats’ — on Robert Mueller’s team:

This whole Russia Probe is Rigged. Just an excuse as to why the Dems and Crooked Hillary lost the Election and States that haven’t been lost in decades. 13 Angry Democrats, and all Dems if you include the people who worked for Obama for 8 years. & CONFLICTS OF INTEREST!

On Sunday, May 27, Trump remembered his young supporters. After his election, he invited them to apply for jobs at the White House. Many of those who came were denied security insurance, thereby preventing them getting those jobs. Talk about a rigged system:

Who’s going to give back the young and beautiful lives (and others) that have been devastated and destroyed by the phony Russia Collusion Witch Hunt? They journeyed down to Washington, D.C., with stars in their eyes and wanting to help our nation…They went back home in tatters!

That afternoon, he tweeted about his predecessor:

Why didn’t President Obama do something about the so-called Russian Meddling when he was told about it by the FBI before the Election? Because he thought Crooked Hillary was going to win, and he didn’t want to upset the apple cart! He was in charge, not me, and did nothing.

Commencement address at Annapolis

On Friday, May 25, Trump delivered the commencement address at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Afterwards, he shook hands with each of the 1,042 newly commissioned ensigns and second lieutenants they received their diplomas.

This tweet has a video highlight:

To the Class of 2018, I say: We know you are up to the task. We know you will make us proud. We know that glory will be yours. Because you are WINNERS, you are WARRIORS, you are FIGHTERS, you are CHAMPIONS, and YOU will lead us to VICTORY! God Bless the U.S.A.!

His attitude was completely different to Obama’s. Obama delivered the address once, getting in and out as quickly as possible. Trump tweeted:

Today, it was my great honor to deliver the 2018 Commencement Address at the United States in Annapolis, Maryland. Congratulations! Good luck. Godspeed. And ANCHORS AWEIGH!

Also:

On behalf of the American People, CONGRATULATIONS! We love you!

Trade

That same day, Trump also took issue with the Democrats who downplay and criticise his fair trade negotiations:

Funny to watch the Democrats criticize Trade Deals being negotiated by me when they don’t even know what the deals are and when for 8 years the Obama Administration did NOTHING on trade except let other countries rip off the United States. Lost almost $800 Billion/year under “O”

Crime in Chicago

After Trump returned from Annapolis, he defended the police in Chicago, who are clearly frustrated — and have been for several years:

Chicago Police have every right to legally protest against the mayor and an administration that just won’t let them do their job. The killings are at a record pace and tough police work, which Chicago will not allow, would bring things back to order fast…the killings must stop!

The police greatly appreciated Trump’s message.

Border security

The border with Mexico is still a mess. Much work remains to be done, as Trump tweeted on May 26:

Put pressure on the Democrats to end the horrible law that separates children from there parents once they cross the Border into the U.S. Catch and Release, Lottery and Chain must also go with it and we MUST continue building the WALL! DEMOCRATS ARE PROTECTING MS-13 THUGS.

Release of US hostage by Venezuela

I have always maintained it’s not that difficult getting US hostages released. Yet, Obama’s State Department under John Kerry said there was nothing they could do (e.g. Otto Warmbier).

To close out a busy Friday, which started at Annapolis, Trump welcomed home Josh Holt, a young Mormon missionary who married a Venezuelan and was accused of having an AK-47 and a grenade. Holt’s family were also in the Oval Office (video at the link).

Before their arrival, he tweeted:

Good news about the release of the American hostage from Venezuela. Should be landing in D.C. this evening and be in the White House, with his family, at about 7:00 P.M. The great people of Utah will be very happy!

Talks with North Korea

On May 24, talks with North Korea were off:

I have decided to terminate the planned Summit in Singapore on June 12th. While many things can happen and a great opportunity lies ahead potentially, I believe that this is a tremendous setback for North Korea and indeed a setback for the world…

By way of explanation, he posted his letter to Kim Jong Un (image at the link).

On May 25, he spoke of opposition to the talks:

Democrats are so obviously rooting against us in our negotiations with North Korea. Just like they are coming to the defense of MS 13 thugs, saying that they are individuals & must be nurtured, or asking to end your big Tax Cuts & raise your taxes instead. Dems have lost touch!

By then, North Korea changed their mind and wanted to proceed:

Very good news to receive the warm and productive statement from North Korea. We will soon see where it will lead, hopefully to long and enduring prosperity and peace. Only time (and talent) will tell!

Later that day, he sent this confirmation:

We are having very productive talks with North Korea about reinstating the Summit which, if it does happen, will likely remain in Singapore on the same date, June 12th., and, if necessary, will be extended beyond that date.

On May 26, he had a go at the New York Times:

Unlike what the Failing and Corrupt New York Times would like people to believe, there is ZERO disagreement within the Trump Administration as to how to deal with North Korea…and if there was, it wouldn’t matter. The has called me wrong right from the beginning!

He continued:

The Failing quotes “a senior White House official,” who doesn’t exist, as saying “even if the meeting were reinstated, holding it on June 12 would be impossible, given the lack of time and the amount of planning needed.” WRONG AGAIN! Use real people, not phony sources.

On May 27, Trump said the US delegation was in North Korea to make arrangements for the June 12 summit in Singapore:

Our United States team has arrived in North Korea to make arrangements for the Summit between Kim Jong Un and myself. I truly believe North Korea has brilliant potential and will be a great economic and financial Nation one day. Kim Jong Un agrees with me on this. It will happen!

Millions of us hope for successful talks.

Memorial Day

Today, President Trump is laying a Memorial Day wreath at Arlington Cemetery (video of his address to the nation at the link).

He had this to say:

Happy Memorial Day! Those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud at how well our country is doing today. Best economy in decades, lowest unemployment numbers for Blacks and Hispanics EVER (& women in 18years), rebuilding our Military and so much more. Nice!

I find the opposition Trump receives from all quarters most unsettling, when he is likely to be the most important and influential American president since Abraham Lincoln. I’m of two minds writing that, knowing Lincoln’s fate, but, may Trump be blessed with many more years of life to come among his family and friends.

Trump is Andrew Jackson II. Tocqueville’s assessment of the man after meeting with him, was of a vulgar and blunt individual which qualities masked a great intelligence owning the complete measure of all his enemies.
Our problem is that Trump has no political party. A constituency he has, but a party he does not. Democrats want to beat him, Republicans want to erase him. Universal suffrage is a stupidifier that cannot be overcome, but I will enjoy Trump throwing dirt in their eyes for as long as this lasts.
If we had a Parliamentary system he would have a party, and a large party. Why is it that you do not have a party to represent yourselves?

I’ve just been infighting with one of these on this very question.

I’m not sure what you mean by your last two sentences, which are confusing. Are you in the US?

‘If we had a Parliamentary system he would have a party …’

      Or the UK?

‘Why is it that you do not have a party to represent yourselves?’

Whatever the case, I’m writing this from the UK.

Every reasonably intelligent American of a certain age, including Trump, knows that third parties don’t win the White House. Teddy Roosevelt (and others since) tried that and failed dismally.

Roosevelt’s 1912 debacle — after two terms as president (1901-1909) — was something once widely taught in US History high school classes in America. Probably less so now. In my time, it was taught as a lesson against populism.

That is why Trump ran as a Republican.

This is what happened to Roosevelt’s Bull Moose Party in 1912. He ran against Republican William Howard Taft and a Democrat, Woodrow Wilson. Wilson won (emphases mine):

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Roosevelt#Election_results

‘Roosevelt won 4.1 million votes (27%), compared to Taft’s 3.5 million (23%). Wilson gained 6.3 million votes (42% of the total) and a massive landslide in the Electoral College, with 435 electoral votes; Roosevelt won 88 electoral votes, while Taft won 8 …

Wilson’s victory represented the first Democratic presidential election victory since Cleveland’s 1892 campaign, and it was the party’s best performance in the Electoral College since 1852. Roosevelt, meanwhile, garnered a higher share of the popular vote than any other third party presidential candidate in history.[236]’

On first reading, it’s a win for Roosevelt with the popular result. However, the Electoral College decides. It’s done by state. Trump knew this. The Founding Fathers established the system — whether Americans like it or not. (I was apoplectic when Bush II won in the Electoral College.)

I will not comment on the notional power of third parties in the UK, which, since I’ve lived here, have managed mostly to win a handful of constituencies at most.

Whether you write in the UK or Mars, the Republican Party began life as a third party. The Whigs were entrenched but moribund. It took the new party six years from it’s first election to gain the White House.

Times have changed. The US system is not conducive to third parties for many reasons. But change is impossible now because both parties are so imbedded in permanent government, and government dwarfs all. If the US were a Parliamentary system a third party would be counterproductive for only one losing election cycle. In other words the Republican Party, entrenched but moribund, would be choked in it’s sleep within four years by Trumps coalition. No one can reform the Republican or Democrat Party. Join it and it will reform you. So when Trump steps down, we will revert back to the great slide. Barring innumerable unforeseen events, of which Trump was one.
